Accredited Attraction
These are the extensive remains of Arbeia, a Roman fort in use from the 2nd to 4th century. It was the supply base for the Roman army's campaign against Scotland and later for troops serving on Hadrian's Wall. On site there are full size reconstructions of The West Gate, a barrack block and part of the commanding officer's house, herb garden and museum of site finds. Archaeological evacuations are in progress throughout the summer.
